Pilates is an exercise programme that works on building strength and stability in both the deep and superficial muscles of the body. It focuses on the core and its ability to support the building blocks of the spine. It promotes mobility and flexibility in the fascia (muscles, ligaments and tendons). This is very important to help release tightness in and around the joints. Conditions such as sciatica (back) and frozen shoulder are two common ailments that are commonly caused by muscle tightness due to bad posture, overuse and compensatory patterns. These in turn create poor biomechanics (body movement), exacerbating the problem. Pilates can help reverse this or even help avoid these conditions by rebalancing the muscle pully system and the exercises create the foundations for rehabilitation. Working systematically and specifically through ranges of movement and with gradual progression, it will create strength and conditioning safely. |
